Lil Wayne Will Go To Jail On 2/9/10

Lil Wayne will start his one year jail term on February 9, 2010, one week after his new album drops. Wayne pleaded guilty in October to weapons charges stemming from an arrest on July 22, 2007 in New York after Wayne’s tour bus was pulled over by police when they smelled pot. When an officer approached the bus, Lil Wayne tossed a bag with the gun inside.

Lil Wayne did not say anything during his appearance in the Manhattan State Court and no decision has been made on where Wayne will serve his term.

The Game has been working with Pharrell Williams on “The R.E.D. Album” and has decided to show his respect and loyalty by tattooing the Star Trak symbol on his arm.

The Game said that “Pharrell's gonna take my career to the next level, keep me 'hood and cross me over at the same time by executive producing my album, so that's how I show my loyalty. Pharrell is my friend. We've created a work bond and established a friendship. Star Trak is gonna make me money in the future -- that logo, that brand, that man helping me. That's something that's gonna put milk in my refrigerator and help me feed my kids, keep them in private school, and keep them doing what they do."

The R.E.D Album Delayed

It has been confirmed by Interscope Records that The Game’s forth album (“The R.E.D. Album") has been delayed. The album was due to be released in December, but is now projected to release February 2010.

The Game said that “the album is officially pushed back, so that I can finish with (Dr.) Dre without having to rush him, myself or the album. Think R.E.D.” The news should not come as a surprise as The Game warned fans that the release date might change.

The Game said that “The R.E.D. Album” is his “rededication to Hip-Hop” and is not a reference to the Bloods as some have speculated.

The single, “Big Money” surfaced on the internet back in October and was produced by Cool & Dre, who produced “Hate It Or Love It” off of “The Documentary” and four tracks off of “L.A.X.” The single, “Krazy” featuring Gucci Man will also appear on the album and was produced by Timbaland. Fans can expected Chris Brown, Akon, Polow Da Don and Jim Jonsin to appear on the album.

Can’t wait until February to hear new Game material? The Game is expected to release new mixtapes in the next few weeks.

Beating Victim Sues The 40/40 Club

Bryant Norwood, who was beaten outside Jay-Z’s 40/40 by club security has filed a lawsuit against the club and club security.

Bryant is asking for a “substantial amount of money” as security (or “bullies” as he described them) attacked him “for no reason” and he now has "diverse personal injuries and permanent injuries." Bryant’s attorney added that, "these so-called security personnel are going to have to answer why Mr. Norwood was lying on the ground being kicked and why he was punched in the head as he tried to escape from them. The 40/40 Club is going to have to answer why they hired people like this to supposedly protect their patrons and maintain order in their establishment."

It is expected that the other beating victim will file a lawsuit against the club.

Representatives for Jay-Z and the 40/40 club have not commented on this matter.

Management for Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in Atlantic City has fired several members of the security team after a videotape surfaced showing security beating two men in the parking lot.

Couri Glen, the former security supervisor said, “We were initially all suspended and then fired for misconduct." Couri also added that he and his security team feels that they were "just doing their jobs” and were wrongly terminated.

The two victims said that they did nothing to provoke the attack, but Couri said that the security team received complaints that the two men in question were groping women. When the security team tried to escort the men out of the club, the men began “swinging” at them.

Nas & Kelis: The Divorce Drama Continues

Kelis took to the stand in her ongoing divorce case with Nas and told the court that she attempted to reconcile with her husband back in September, but it did not work out. Kelis also told the court that it has been very difficult to earn money due to the fact she is caring for a baby and that there are not a lot of job opportunities within the music business. Kelis did say that she did look for work outside of the music industry, but there were not a lot of job options available.

Kelis is asking for continued spousal support as Nas was the primary earner in the marriage and still continues to earn a lot of money. Kelis said that Nas will be releasing two albums next year.

The judge ordered Nas to pay $40,454 in spousal support and $10,647 in child support. Nas also must pay $46,022 for Kelis' attorney fees. Kelis has custody for now, but Nas is asking the court for more access to his son.

Almost exactly eleven years after its posthumous release, legendary rapper Tupac Shakur’s 1998 hit “Changes” has been selected by the Vatican as one of the institution’s “12 Favorite Songs” as part of a playlist for MySpace’s new streaming service MySpace Music. The distinction is the first time the Catholic Church has officially recognized the work of any popular American artist. With it, the song joins the ranks of works such as “Don Giovanni” by Mozart, the Vatican’s own “Advocata Nostra,” featuring the voice of Pope Benedict XVI, and “After The Rain,” by Dame Shirley Bassey. “The genres are very different from each other, but all these artists share the aim to reach the heart of good minded people,” the Vatican explained on its official MySpace Music page. The playlist, compiled by Father Giulio Neroni, was released Thursday, December 3 – and “Changes” has received nearly five million plays since then.

“This came as such an amazing surprise – it’s not something I would have ever thought possible,” says the late rapper’s mother, Afeni Shakur. “I give thanks every day, knowing Tupac’s words and music continue to have such an incredible effect on people worldwide. My son was always striving to reach out to as many people as he could, and he changed the world in doing so.”

Released two years after the rapper’s death in 1998, “Changes” has been acknowledged as one of Tupac’s all-time classics ever since, with a message that resonates just as strongly today. The song is a streetwise meditation on racism, the Middle East, drugs and gang violence coupled with a call for hope and peace. Exuding positivity and truth through both his music and his lifestyle, Wyclef Jean takes his seat at the head throne of Hip Hop’s conscience. Hip Hop’s humanitarian has recently embarked on another solo album, “From the Hut, to the Projects, to the Mansion,” an album revealing much more of the idol.

As Jean collaborates with the infamous mix tape king, DJ Drama, he is attempting to cross the lines in which isolate him from “real” Hip Hop heads. In his track, “The Streets Pronounce me Dead,” he claims that the last time Hip Hop heads “felt” him was when he “rhymed with Big Pun.” Moving along with the latest trend of Alter-Egos, Jean introduces Toussaint St. Jean with this latest compilation; an inspiration from the Haitian liberator Toussaint L'Ouverture. The most noted track, “Slumdog Millionaire,” (with a cameo voice appearance by Cyndi Lauper) revisits the struggle of many, but offers a positive result of it. He speaks of struggle with a happy ending, as he states that we all have talents that can take us beyond our own limited imaginations.

In a breath, this album is a rebirth of Jean’s lyrical talent and powerful and visual story telling. It is a much needed resurrection.

Tahj Mowry's New Gig

Tahj Mowry has been an entertainer since the age of 4. Fans are familiar with Tahj’s work on "Sister, Sister," “Smart Guy” and “Kim Possible,” but now Tahj has moved into a music career and can be heard on the international hit “Kick It Out” by Japanese rock group Boom Boom Satellites. Now, before you think that this is another actor becoming a singer, Tahj wants people to know how serious he is as he embarks on the newest chapter in his career.

Speaking with Tahj was an absolute pleasure, as he's a grounded, charming and funny (or goofy as he put it) guy. The work ethic, dedication and focus Tahj has shown in his career is amazing and I believe that Tahj’s music career will be fresh and something that people will be talking about.

VH: I know that you're an actor, but what surprised me is that you're now doing music.

Tahj: Music has always been in the works. I love music and the time is right to start my music career.

VH: You have a single out now, correct?

Tahj: Sort of. I did a track with Boom Boom Satellites, a popular Japanese rock-electronica band. The single is called “Kick It Out.” The track also has Flo-Rida, and is a mix of hip-hop, R&B, rock and electronica. It's a great track and when you hear it, you’ll say, “Wow, what’s this?” The track is available on iTunes.

VH: When will your single be out?

Tahj: Next February… around Valentine’s Day.

VH: How did you get involved with Boom Boom Satellites?

Tahj: They heard that I was getting into the music business and they thought my sound would be a great addition. The song (“Kick It Out”) is about trying something new, being innovated and fresh; building bridges and bringing people together through music. That's what I'm trying with my music career. It's a great introduction.

VH: Who are you working with on your single and album?

Tahj: Timbaland’s camp. He's a great producer!

VH: How did you get involved with Timbaland’s camp?

Tahj: When I wanted to get into music, I told my mom, who is also my manager, and she had me sing for her. My mom saw my talent and hustled, and got me a meeting with Big Rick, from Timbaland’s camp. I met with Cheryl Banks, who is now my music manager. From there on, its been non-stop.

VH: How would you describe your sound? What do you want your fans to know about your music?

Tahj: I would describe is as alternative R&B. A mix of everything- rock, pop, electronica. It’s fresh and new- something that has not been done before. The album is not going to be one track is rock, one track is pop…it's everything combined. There's going to be a mix of live instruments and drum kits, for example.

Music is my main focus and my goal is to bring music back; genres are in a box right now. I want my music to have no color lines- bridging races and sound, and to be innovative. I want people to hear my music and say, “That’s Tahj.” That’s why I love “Kick It Out” so much. I'm not trying to be Usher or Chris Brown, I'm just being me. I don’t want people thinking that I'm getting in music because I'm bored and just want something to do. I'm a real dude, and I feel that my fans can see the real me. When you're acting, people see a character, but now they can see me. Music right now is not saying anything, and I want my music to be about something. Be ready because if you’re not, it will fly right past you.

VH: Are you doing any shows?

Tahj: I did some shows in New York and few in Los Angeles… like the Viper Room. I will be doing some high school shows next year.

VH: Are you going to have any collaborations on the album?

Tahj: Not really. In the future, I would love to work with Janet Jackson. I'm a big fan and I would love to do a dance routine with her, as I'm also a dancer. I would also love to work with Lenny Kravitz.

VH: Lenny just finished his first acting role in the film “Precious,” maybe you can give him some acting tips.

Tahj: That would be awesome!

VH: Many know you from the shows "Sister, Sister," “Smart Guy” & “Kim Possible.” Do you still act?

Tahj: Yes. Music is my main focus now, but I still work and I have some projects in the works for next year. “Kim Possible” was one of the longest running cartoon series on Disney Channel and I do voice work for “Kim Possible” video games, and there's a ride in the works.

VH: Do plan to act with your sisters (twins Tia and Tamera Mowry) again in the future?

Tahj: Definitely, down the road. Working with the family is like being at home.

VH: Thank you for speaking with me today. I wish you all the best. I'm looking forward to hearing your new single and album and to see you perform. Can I get front row seats to the show?

Attack At Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club

An investigation is underway at Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in Atlantic City after a video surfaced showing several bouncers and event staff attacking two male patrons in the club’s parking lot.

It was reported by club security that the men had acted inappropriately in the club, but the victims dispute the claim saying they did nothing wrong inside or outside of the club.

Police are reviewing the video and will file charges against the bouncers and event staff for what is being described as a brutal attack against two men who are clearly outnumbered and can not defend themselves.

A representative for the 40/40 club said that "we can't comment on the fight. We are doing our own investigation in addition to the police investigation. It's really in the hands of the police at this point. The 40/40 club has never had anything like this happen before and we take the safety of our patrons seriously."

Coming Soon: Relapse: The Refill

Eminem will release “Relapse: The Refill” on December 21st. The album will include the entire “Relapse” album, plus seven songs that did not make the album. Eminem said his hopes for “Relapse: The Refill” is to “deliver more material for the fans this year like I originally planned. Hopefully these tracks on “The Refill” will tide the fans over until we put out “Relapse 2” next year. I got back in with Dre and then a few more producers, including Just Blaze, and went in a completely different direction which made me start from scratch. The new tracks started to sound very different than the tracks I originally intended to be on “Relapse 2”, but I still want the other stuff to be heard.”

Eminem is currently in the studio working on “Relapse 2” which is scheduled to be released next year. Eminem said “I definitely feel like I’m in a different space right now. With the last record, I think a lot of it had to do with me getting sober, my eyes being open again. With Relapse, I wanted to prove myself that I could still do it. The zany, loony, ridiculous shit, so a lot of that album is rapid-fire punch lines. Now I’m at a point where I’m blessed enough to be in a position where I don’t need to put out records, but I want to.”

“Let It Beat” is the second album from Shwayze, but if you are expecting laid back songs about summer days, you're going to be disappointed. As Cisco Adler puts it, "We can't sit on the beach with an acoustic guitar forever! This is not a one-trick pony."

The way I describe “Let It Beat” is a night at the club. The songs fun, sexy and dirty - isn’t that what a night out should be? “Let It Beat” offers something for everyone as the music captures all genres. The album features contributions from The Knux, Snoop Dogg, Roy Bittan (the pianist of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band) and Ric Ocasek from the Cars (seriously!), and Darryl Jenifer, bassist for D.C. punk band Bad Brains. Leading the parade is the world-famous producer Cisco Adler.

“Livin' It Up” (featuring Snoop Dogg) is Shwayze’s journey from “serving lattes all day in [his] Chucks” to becoming a successful rapper. Shwayze’s addresses his haters by saying “always gonna be somebody trying to hate on u but that don't stop what we do/living it up/why u hating/ I'm living it up.”

"Get U Home," is about being so excited about “making love” you just can’t wait to take the person home (or to a hotel.) "Take me in the bathroom/take my clothes off/make love to me up against the dirty wall/'cause I can't wait to get you home."

Shwayze said "our music is our lifestyle, we're not faking it. It's all a dream come true, we just want to keep on living the dream and keep on living it up. We’re just here for the long haul here, that’s what I want people to know.“ “Let It Beat” is a great sophomore album and it shows the comfort and growth between Cisco and Shwayze. If they can keep expanding their sound and lyrics, they will be around for the long haul.

50 Cent - Before I Self Destruct

“Before I Self Destruct” was planned to be released in 2007, but 50 decided to release “Curtis” instead and pushed “Before I Self Destruct” back. A few singles were leaked earlier this year like “Get Up” and “I Get In.”

Some fans were confused about why “Curtis” came before “Before I Self Destruct.” 50 said, “Some people think I changed the title of my album from 'Before I Self Destruct' to 'Curtis,' but what I did was I changed albums. I had 'Before I Self Destruct,' recorded; twelve songs under that actual topic, and then I created the material that is under 'Curtis,' and I felt like this album should come out right now and 'Before I Self Destruct' is gonna be my follow-up record, so I'm probably like three or four records away from completing my next album at this point.

“Before I Self Destruct” is a mix of street life and sex. The first part of the album is violent, with tales of drugs, death and vengeance with the last part of the album being dedicated to the bedroom.

"The Invitation," "Death to My Enemies" and "So Disrespectful" are your typical gangster rap standards, with lyrics like “I bring money to my friends, death to my enemies” and "Enemies stay enemies/ But friends they change/ Niggas go crazy over money” from the track “So Disrespectful.” Eminem and 50 pair up on “Psycho” and is one of the highlights of the album.

The creepiest lyrics in music has to be from “Then Days Went By” in which 50 talks about sleeping with his babysitter. "She was 20, I was 12/ Nana said she raped me/ I just smiled ear to ear saying 'take it, baby, take it."

“Baby By Me” with Ne-Yo is currently a hit on the Billboard charts, and with ladies, as 50 raps about finding the love of his life and starting a family. The song contains a sample from 50’s “I Get Money.”

Dr. Dre, Lab Ox, DJ Khalil, Rockwilder create dark, heavy bangers, which is reminiscent of 50’s first album “Get Rich Or Die Tryin’.” 50 still has a hunger and drive in him (which is why he is one of the richest rappers of all time). The contrast of having street and sex is good, but I think 50 is better when he sticks with street life as a few of the sex songs come off as cheap and cheesy, otherwise “Before I Self Destruct” is a good album.

50 Cent Screens “Before I Self Destruct”

50 Cent made a special appearance at the AMC 16 in Burbank yesterday to talk to his fans and screen his newest movie, “Before I Self Destruct” (also the name of his new album, releasing on 11/16).

Fans were lined up around the block for the screening, waving pictures and posters, wearing G-Unit clothing and blasting 50’s music. As the crowd entered the theater at 7:45pm, 50’s new album was playing. Fans begun dancing in the aisles and texting and calling everyone they knew to brag about where they were.

At 8:35pm, the music stopped and a voice came over the loudspeaker saying “What’s up everyone? You like the record?” Cheers, clapping and screaming filled the room as 50 Cent took the stage. 50 said that he was happy to in Burbank with his fans to show them his labor of love “Before I Self Destruct,” a film he wrote and directed. 50 told the crowd how he has made four albums, over 60 music videos and countless films. Working with talented producers, writers and directors inspired 50 to branch out and focus on his other talents.

With that said, 50 sat with the audience (and two rows away from me) to watch the movie. The movie is about Clarence (50 Cent,) a basketball player who suffers an injury which prevents him from playing in the pros and his family’s struggle to survive. When his mother is tragically gunned down, Clarence is consumed by grief and revenge and takes up a life of crime in order to support his little brother. The movie will be included with the “Before I Self Destruct” CD.

When the lights came up, the audience applauded and 50 waved goodbye. As the fans exited, you could see them texting and calling again to brag (and I can’t blame them as I was doing the same.)

The movie is a great debut for 50 as he created characters with depth and a wide range of emotions. 50 said that this is just the start of his writing and directing career as he is working another project that will start filming in December.

Coolio To Enter The Ring…

DMX was set to fight Eric Martinez in an upcoming celebrity fight in Alabama, but DMX is out and Coolio is in. DMX originally agreed to the terms of the fight, but his people later said that DMX will only participate if he is guaranteed the win.

DMX’s manager, Nakia Walker, submitted an addendum to the original contract saying “Event Promoter and Management agree that [DMX] is scheduled to win Boxing Challenge." and "All parties agree this event has been scheduled to occur only in fun and that the artist involved is not a professional boxer." The manager cited that DMX is "a hip hop artist, not a boxer."

The fight promoters, Thunder Promotions, refused to sign the addendum because they never agreed to fix anything and that this is a real fight which DMX agreed to. DMX threatened to back out and the promoters chose rapper Coolio to replace DMX while they also prepare a lawsuit for breach of contract. Thunder Productions said that “Coolio has been much easier to deal with and he is going to take this seriously."

Eminem To Perform At Voodoo Experience

Eminem will be performing at this weekends Voodoo Experience (a punk and rock festival) in New Orleans. Eminem headlined the festival back in 2000. "This is the only concert Eminem is doing all year," said Voodoo producer Steven Rehage. "We're really excited to have him back."

Eminem is expected to perform songs from his latest album "Relapse" when he opens the festival on Friday. Also performing on Friday are Ween, The Black Keys and Fischerspooner.

KISS, Jane’s Addiction, Wolfmother, Black Lips and George Clinton/Parliament Funkadelic are performing Saturday and Sunday’s acts include Lenny Kravitz, the Flaming Lips and Meat Puppets.

New York, NY – Israeli producer Jonathan Dagan's award winning electronica project J.Viewz will perform a late set at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City next month. The live outfit
of J.Viewz, featuring lead vocalist Noa Lembersky & MC Urijah, has a unique combination of vocals, electronic beats, live drums and turntables, flowing from Breakbeat to Jazz, Electro and Reggae. They take the stage at 12:30am on Friday, November 6, 2009.

Based in Brooklyn, J.Viewz is a multi-genre, multi-media music project with revolving band members. Electronic-music producer Jonathan Dagan (from Tel Aviv, Israel) first formed the group in 2002, and has since produced two albums under J.Viewz: Muse Breaks (2005) and The Besides EP (2008). The project’s first single “Your Country” off Muse Breaks entered several music charts abroad (including DJ Mag's hype chart, the Ministry of Sound's radio chart and the DMC UPDATE Chart) and hit several international radio stations, including Kiss 100 FM, Ministry of Sound radio, and Radio One.

Some might recognize them as Miley Cyrus’ backing band in the film “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” but don’t confuse Hollywood for reality- Days Difference is no stranger to the music industry. The pop/rock band from Virginia Beach, VA consists of of Jeremy Smith (lead vocals/keyboard), Jonathan Smith (drums), Micah Ricks (bass guitar) and Jeremiah Ricks (lead guitar).

Originally signed to Black Dog Recordings, the band released their debut album “Numbers” in 2007. The band toured and developed a genuine connection with their fans. Universal Motown saw potential in the band and signed them after they played an industry showcase.

The band’s newest release is called “Days Difference” and it showcases Jeremy Smith’s songwriting skills (he co-wrote six of the ten tracks) and includes a who’s who in the music industry…Wayne Wilkins (Beyonce), Andrew Frampton (Kylie Minogue), Stefanie Ridel Fair (Fergie and the Pussycat Dolls) and former OneRepublic bassist Tim Myers.

The album is a catchy pop record; some stand-out songs are, “Are You Happy?”, “Falling Into You” and “Love Is Enough.”

The band portrays a great image of having fun which I could feel listening to the songs. The band’s melodies and harmonies are great. While the Jonas Brothers may be the popular boy band on the scene, I believe that Days Difference is poised to be the next big thing as I believe fans will not be disappointed in what the band has to offer now on this album and future albums to come.

Charges Against Kanye West Dropped

Charges filed against Kanye and his bodyguard Don Crowley for a fight with photographers at LAX last September was dropped, but Kanye and Don will have to complete 50 hours of community service.

Kanye and his bodyguard were facing misdemeanor charges after the two struggled with photographers in which camera equipment was broken and a photographer was injured.

Since the incident, Kanye settled with photographer, paying for the damaged equipment and injuries suffered. Kanye also attended 12 hours of anger management.

Lil Wayne Pleads Guilty To Attempted Weapon Possession & Other Legal Troubles

Lil Wayne pled guilty to attempted weapon possession in New York. Lil Wayne was arrested on July 22, 2007 in New York after his tour bus was pulled over by police when they smelled pot. According to the report, when an officer approached the bus, Lil Wayne tossed a bag with the gun inside. Lil Wayne is expected to get 1 year behind bars.

Lil Wayne is still facing a felony drug possession and weapons charge in Arizona after police found 105 grams of marijuana, 29 grams of cocaine, 41 grams of ecstasy and a handgun on his tour bus back in 2008. Lil Wayne has pled not guilty to all the charges. The trial is expected to start March 2010.

DMX: Not Allowed On Stage

DMX was supposed to perform at a charity concert last weekend in Colorado Springs, but when he showed up over 90 minutes late, security would not let him perform.

Fans were told that DMX was a no show, but when word spread that DMX was in the venue, the crowd chanted "DMX! DMX!" A fight broke out between DMX, his bodyguards, fans and concert security when DMX tried to take the stage. Once everyone calmed down, DMX went on stage, but the soundsystem was already turned off, so DMX could not perform his set.

Nas Accused Of Not Paying His Taxes

What is it with rappers being accused of not paying their taxes…first Method Man and now Nas.

Nas had a federal tax lien filed against him last month for not paying his 2006 and 2007 taxes. Nas currently owes $2,584,206.31 to the government.

Nas is involved in a divorce battle Kelis. Kelis said in court documents that Nas makes $244,826 a month. Kelis won a judgment back in July where Nas has to pay $55,000 a month for spousal and child support. It is not known how the tax lien will affect Nas’ ability to make his support payments.

Neither Nas or his reps have commented on the situation.

In the past 30 years or so, Hip-Hop has grown from the streets of New York to become an international cultural phenomenon, with influences stemming from rock, pop, country, Indian and Middle Eastern music.

I had the opportunity to listen to an up-and-coming DJ crew from Tel Aviv called Soulico. DJ Sabbo, Rob, Shimmy Sonic and Wido had success spinning records as solo DJ’s, but they decided to come together, combining their skills to become a premier live act.

Soulico released three mixtapes to critical acclaim and has now released their first album, “Exotic On The Speaker.” The album combines hip-hop, reggae, dance hall, Jewish/Israeli folk music and disco, and features some of the best MC's in Hip-Hop: Ghostface Killah from Wu-Tang, Del The Funkee Homosapien, Lyrics Born, and Rye Rye (M.I.A’s protégé).

“El Nur” featuring Ghostface Killah is energetic and is a great start for the album. “Queen Of Hearts” is just pure dancehall fun and “Politrix” with Del The Funkee Homosapien is a robotic electronic track. I felt that even though there are a lot of guest artists on the album, Soulico still stands out; this can be hard, especially when going up against a hip-hop legend like Ghostface Killah, but they pull it off well.

The mix of Arabic and Hebrew with rap is not new, but Soulico has a genuine respect for hip-hop, and they seamlessly blend so many styles together without sounding cluttered. The ambition and drive that Soulico displays is refreshing, and as I have been saying in many of my rap reviews this year, I love how hip-hop is expanding into in territories and becoming more experimental. Soulico has a bright career ahead of them and “Exotic On The Speaker” a perfect description of what the crew is.

Inhabiting the role of Toussaint on these songs, Wyclef recreates himself in the spirit of a noble fighter, a man who says exactly what is on his mind. Toussaint’s rhymes hit hard, in a “militant style,” and make his words felt – and remembered.

And so what is the difference between Wyclef and Toussaint? “Toussaint is more direct,” Wyclef says. “He ain’t going to sugarcoat nothing. Whatever he’s thinking, he’s going to tell you. It’s like, I’ve still got this machete – my tongue is sharper than it’s ever been.” To help create suitable musical settings for the grisly tales Toussaint has to tell, Wyclef turned to DJ Drama. “I asked myself, ‘Who’s the toughest guy out there?’” Wyclef says. “Then I said, well, DJ Drama is pretty bad-ass. The gripping storytelling in those songs recalls the raw environments in Haiti and Brooklyn from which Wyclef emerged – “from the hut to the projects to the mansion,” as he memorably puts it in “Slumdog Millionaire.” It’s a story arc that these songs make compelling.

Wyclef views the message of “Toussaint St. Jean” as “not everything that appears bad is really bad, because the real bad men move in silence. So be careful what you emulate, because it’s could get you six feet deep. If you don’t see me with a gun, it doesn’t mean that the guy with the gun is badder than me. I’ve been in those communities, but you’ve got to rise past that world.”

And, as always with Wyclef, there’s more to the story than meets the eye. “Toussaint St. Jean” represents just the first step on the road to another album he intends to release in 2010 titled simply “wyclefjean.” The album will reflect a three-dimensional portrait of an artist for whom the gritty sagas of Toussaint St. Jean are just one part.

Wyclef Jean remains signed to Columbia Records/Sony Music and is set to release his self-titled LP "Wyclef Jean" in Spring 2010.

Hip-Hop Artist Gets Happy and Still Lyrically Moves the Masses

He's the only MC to refer to himself as Howard Zinn meets Howard Stern! Coming straight out of Minnesota, it's the one and only Brother Ali. Ali is back with his latest disc simply entitled "US." On the new disc, Ali keeps up his streak of being able to tell stories and twist metaphors, but some of these tunes actually sound happy! Ali is celebrating fatherhood and his new marriage on this disc, while still waxing poetically on the state of affairs in our society. He is on tour now but he was ready to throw down with me about his new disc and the other new facets of his life.

David Carr: Brother Ali how are you feeling as you start this tour? Are you excited about promoting your new disc?

Brother Ali: You know I have struggled for so long to get my life to reflect who I am as a person and now it is really starting to happen. The pieces are finally falling into place. Most people just go with the next best thing. Most people just figure they have to settle and not realize their true potential. Slug from Atmosphere taught me how to do this. He taught me how to really go for what I want and really be who I am. He changed my opinion of what I can do and achieve -- I have rebuilt my life.

DC: What has this new found sense of self, meant to you as an artist?

BA: Overall, I just have a sense that I do not have to be in survival mode anymore. My faith and my beliefs have really helped me reach this point -- now I am able to share what I have with others. I have been trying to get some peace in my life -- a lot of my past songs had a "F#ck you for not understanding" attitude. I think now I am really trying to be close to and share things with folks who are very different than me.

DC: Being one of the only albino, Muslim rappers in hip-hop my sense is you know all about being different. Do you feel a sense of peace with regards to your own personal sense of difference?

BA: I made peace with that a long time ago. My identity muscles had to become huge when I was 12 years old! I dealt with all of that on a tune called "Forrest Whitaker." Me being albino along with having a lot of self discipline is what has made me a good rapper -- it really gave me a lot to talk about.

DC: Talk to me about how you got hooked up with Rhymesayers. Was Slug a major influence on getting you on the label?

BA: HA! Slug was actually the last person to embrace me! Rhymesayers is a collective of artists and business people. They found me and brought me to the label. When I did meet him I was gonna be put on tour with him. I told him I needed to know if he was cool with all of this, if he was cool with me being on the label. He just said yeah and then blew me off. Looking back, I understand the reaction. He and other folks had put a lot of time and money into other artists on the label only to see them just blow Rhymesayers off -- I understood what was going on. I cut my first disc, we went on tour and we became family. Slug has been generous with his support and guidance.

DC: What is the hip-hop scene in Minnesota like?

BA: There is a strong supportive scene there. To be honest I think a lot of the camaraderie is built around the suffering that goes down in the winter! I mean we get nine months of winter! We are isolated and alone when it comes to that and it is no joke! That kind of experience brings about a certain type of bonding and camaraderie.

DC: You are a devout Muslim and you talk about your faith in your music. In a post 9/11 America is it tough to be an American Muslim?

BA: A lot of my views are framed by my faith -- I know that there is a negative perception of Muslims in this country. In my mind what needs to happen is instead of crying about what people believe about Muslims, what we need to do is improve the concept and reality of what Islam is. The tenants of Islam that I follow are not the ones that get broadcast to the public. It's the more radical views that are written about in the press. We as Muslims need to do a better job of showing the US and the world what true Islamic faith is all about.

DC: In hip-hop there seems to be different camps that have been created. You have the bling camp, the gangsta camp, old school, the more street political camp and then the Rhymesayers are an entity to themselves. Can there be any type of hip-hop unity?

BA: Well, at Rhymesayers, we are traditional hip-hop. The hip-hop we all loved and listened to was ALL underground when we were coming up and there were many different flavors to it from gangsta, to party rap to the Black Power stuff, but it was all underground and all hip-hop. I think you will see a lot more unity in the near future. What has separated us has been the business not the music. The business aspect of the music has had a very narrow scope but that is changing. I mean, me personally, I don't see all these different camps. I love the latest Jay-Z disc and I loved the latest disc by MURS. I have toured with Brand Nubian, Ghostface Killiah and Rakim twice. It's all just hip-hop to me.

DC: I always enjoy asking hip-hop artists how they feel about the current state of affairs with hip-hop. What do you think of the genre in its current state?

BA: I think it's great! You have a lot of different groups, artists -- you have a ton of different people expressing themselves! Even the mainstream is moving forward. The leaders in the mainstream are making creative music. I would like to see more unity but its coming. It's fashionable for some hip-hop artists to criticize hip-hop. I never do. I never talk about what's wrong with hip-hop -- I never talk about what's wrong. I just try to do what's right.

The band performs their music on actual instruments (which you don’t see in Electronica), with all three members of the band serving multiple roles- songwriting, composing, etc. Unique and intelligent, members, phAxas, dhArma and IhArma create luscious, dark, primal beats based philosophical concepts.

The name organicArma is a reflection of our approach" says phAxas. “The 'organic' is that which cannot be controlled. Our music itself is our ‘arma’ or our ability to plan, build, and create within the constructs of what is unknown to man." lhArma adds, "organicArma can also be a way to express the brain - our organic tool.” dhArma puts it, “It’s how a human being approaches everything that they cannot control. organicArma’s message, is to encourage listeners to question reality and create a new one based on their imagination.”

The bands two EP’s Awarned & Discordia give you a great introduction to what the band is about. Each EP contains the original organicArma version and remixes. Electronica fans will not be disappointed in this collection. Discordia has a dark, industrial feel and reminded me of Nine Inch Nails, but still unique- not just imitating. Awarned has a pounding jungle beat, that is great to dance to. The remixes are excellently done and keep the original feel alive while adding some new spice.

I am very impressed with organicArma and their approach to music. I could tell in listening to their music and interviewing them, how close each member is and their fearlessness to introduce ideas you normally don’t hear in music in general.

 WCOR: You incorporate philosophy, linguistics, psychology and science into your music, which does set you apart from what other bands are doing. What got you into Nietzsche, Jung or Fromm for example? 

organicArma: The necessity comes from expressing new emotions through music. We realized that the generalities are controlling music and there has been a focus on sex, love, anger and power. We want to entertain people in a more seductive way utilizing concepts that express how things could be or ought to be and transform people into their opposites. From love to love is not it all, or from a tradition to trade the omnipotent for free will. We sing and play along to anything that makes us question.  

WCOR: Electronica has been considered a genre for clubs. Your band encompasses more than the genre definition. How do you feel when people think Electronica is just dance music with no soul or message? 

organicArma: Electronica has had some of the most relevant artists when we refer to new emotions and concepts. From Kraftwerk, Gorillaz, Rabbit in the Moon, Bjork and Depeche Mode. The genre allows one to play any style of music once you find a sound that is unique and particular to you. The ability to present it in an open dance format allows the message to pass through any pre-conceived notion. Also the genre lends itself to the possibility of transmission integrated with visuals that further connect the critical eye with the message.  

WCOR: Electronica has many genres under its umbrella like trip-hop, dub, jungle, dub for example. Who’s inspired you within Electronica and what other styles of music have inspired you? 

organicArma: Our list of influential artists is vast. To begin with a few: Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Plastikman, Orbital, Underworld, Rabbit in the Moon, Tricky, Portishead, Villalobos, Prodigy, Mouse on Mars, Herbert, FischerSpooner, Roni Size, Modeselektor and Uberzone.
 Additional genres that interest us, either in their form or a mix of forms are: Techno, Minimal Techno, TechHouse, EBM, Dub, Drum & Bass, Breakbeats and lately we are having a lot of fun with DubStep. Anything that moves within electronica we will try because it is a great challenge to play those rhythms and produce those sounds.  

WCOR: You have performed in many beautiful and exotic places. Have these cities and countries inspired your music and how you view the world? 

organicArma: To play in Paris at the Louvre was a travel-in-time experience, moving from our music ships to the insights of the museum in front of one of the greatest kinetic artists Carlos Cruz Diez. It was like converting the past in the future. The audience was attending the fashion installation and they looked like performers with intricate wardrobe from all over the world. Our great friend and artist, Ruddy Candilllon, was projecting visual kinetic art amidst all of that. The senses were in motion. Our music in the moment had been inspired by Daft Punk and Motor and the analog-driven synth bass artists from France. 

The Tour with FischerSpooner was also special in a similar sense. We remember talking about City Lights Library in San Francisco and experiencing the great history of The Fillmore, then playing a joke about Carrie the horror movie in a Portland ballroom and finally being in a theater rave in Detroit. Again, travel allows you to move through time. Past and future oscillating with your existence.  

WCOR: I like your philosophy on how there is no one lead singer since all members are responsible for the lyrics and the overall sound. How do you write your songs? Do you write alone or collectively?  

organicArma: We write the songs collectively based on concepts. We try to keep our own experiences as just part of the reality. We like to start from thesis. For example, in the case with "Fear" and "Demente": Fear takes you from the possession of the inferior feeling to the possibility of controlling the adrenaline of the momentum to use it in your favor and Demente is the counterpart pushing you to create multiple personalities from where your brave alter ego can see the weak sensible human positive elements from traditions.  

WCOR: Where do you see your career going? What would you like to accomplish? 

organicArma: 11 Conceptual records. 11 Original songs each. Remix Albums. Live Performances with Live Recordings and Videos. A conceptual show that presents a philosophy where you can play any part from your conscience to the consciousness to the subconscious or the unknown. Where nothing is true and everything is allowed. With multiple personalities you can do that and stay in order with society, the ethics and the law. See OIA as a Pink Floyd with a movement that allows people to remain themselves while being opened to alternative realities.

  WCOR: Is there any artist or producer you would like to work with and why?
 
organicArma: There are many artists we would enjoy working with. We are always opened to collaborate. Either through a remix, a jam, sharing sounds or changing the lyrics of an influential song.   

Kanye West In India?

Kanye has been keeping a low profile recently- he canceled several TV appearances, a tour with Lady Gaga (Lady Gaga will tour solo) and a New Year’s Eve show at Madison Square Garden.

Many are wondering what is going on and rumors are already circulating that Kanye is in rehab (there were several reports that Kanye was drunk at the VMA's). There is no confirmation that Kanye is in rehab, but Kanye did say on The Jay Leno show “I need to take some time off and just analyze how I’m going to make it through the rest of this life, how I’m going to improve.”

Sources close to Kanye are saying that Kanye might be in India to find himself. In the past two years, Kanye has lost his mother, his engagement with Alexis Rainey ended and he has had some legal trouble. Some close to Kanye said that he has not dealt with these situations and now feels overwhelmed. A source said that “Kanye knows he needs to come back from this break changed, and that isn’t going to happen at some rehab overlooking the ocean. He goes to India, he has a chance to come back seeming like he learned something from what happened.” The source also added that “there’s no plan yet for him to step back into the spotlight soon any time soon.”

Regardless if Kanye is in India, rehab or some other location, I hope that he is getting the break he deserves and that he is getting better.

As I sat there on the line, in complete silence, all that could be heard was the heavy beating of my own heart, as I was a nervous wreck for the first time, in a long time, before the interview. It began, and they confirmed my credentials… “Ms. Rivera?” I confirmed my identity and just like that, J. Cole was on the line.

Smooth, calm and nonchalant to the highest degree, Cole seemed to epitomize the very phrase, “Southern Hospitality.” The newly signed Roc Nation artist is not a southern boy to be overlooked, as he spoke to me with confidence about his future, strategies and expectations.

As Cole’s second Mixtape, The Warm Up, released in the summer of 2009, it was a breaking point for all who have been yearning the coming of a new star. As Hip Hop heads and Jay-Z Addicts looked for the next big thing, the realistic lyrics of Cole stirred through the cities, breaking entrances into the top playlist of all who have been awaiting a new sound. Although, his influences are of only the Great Ones, his most recognizable influence is that of Tupac, as Cole inherited a grand flow for story telling, as his words lead us to a visual scene of play-by-play action.

His lyrics, tone and perception on life, is that of a humble enthusiast, yearning for his mark on the Hip Hop world. His raps can only be described as sincere, for his words spring from his surrounds, his knowledge and his eagerness to succeed.

As a Magnum Cum Laude graduate, Cole sees his future through the illuminated lights of achievement, as his street smarts, academic knowledge and lyrical talent will help him rise above the rest, as he sets to break out of the overbearing shadow of the impeccable Jay-Z, as he will indulge in Music Production as well as claim his title of “Best New Lyricist.”

Cole’s success in inevitable as he states that he will “stick to the game plan and what he knows,” as he plans to captivate his audience with his “creativity and innovative mind on songs and beats.” He states that the only way to take his “career further” is through his “loyalty to his fan base.” As he sits at the top of the list of rising icons, Cole will differentiate his sound by the only way he knows how…humility.

Kanye’s “Fame Kills” tour with Lady Gaga has been canceled. The tour was scheduled to start in November. No reason was given for the cancellation, but there were rumors that Kanye and Lady Gaga were fighting daily and that ticket sales were low. There were also rumors that fans were still upset with Kanye over the VMA incident with Taylor Swift and they were boycotting the tour.

You may not be familiar with the name Kid Cudi, but you might be familiar with his work. In the past year or so, Cudi has worked with Kanye West (he guested on “Welcome To Heartbreak” and helped write “Heartless” and “Paranoid” off 808’s & Heartbreak), Robin Thicke, The Black Eyed Peas and Jay-Z (on the track “Already Home” off The Blueprint 3) to name a few.

Kid Cudi hails from New York, but he is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. He released his first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi, in collaboration with NY streetwear brand 10. Deep as a free download. The mixtape got Kanye West’s attention and he signed Cudi to his G.O.O.D. Music label.

Man On The Moon: The End Of The Day is Kid Cudi’s debut album. Experimental, daring, poppy and trippy, Kid pushes what the definition of a hip-hop album is. With production from Kanye, Emile, Plain Pat and dance acts Ratatat and MGMT, the album's beats further Cudi’s lyrics of pain, love and getting high - What impressed me was that the album was divided into five acts, with the songs falling into a particular act. The move is very theatrical and creative.

Cudi has already released two hit singles, “Day ‘N’ Night” and “Make Her Say” (featuring Kanye West and Common), which has an acoustic sample of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.”

Losing his father at a young age to cancer and seeing his mother struggle, Cudi uses this inspiration to create his own anthem. “Heart Of A Lion (Kid Cudi Theme Music)” shows Cudi becoming a lion- strong against the world. “At the end of the day my momma told me don’t let no one break me/At the end of the day I’m walking with a heart of a lion.”

“My World” is another rising up anthem. Speaking again to his loss and struggle, Cudi shows how he keeps moving forward despite growing up lonely, having low self esteem and being different because “one day, this will be my world (I told you so).”

“Hyyerr” is dedicated to wonders of smoking weed. I have never gotten high, but listening to this track, I think I might have an idea of what it feels like. The beat and delivery are slow and drawn out to a slurred state.

“Up Up & Away” is a perfect closer to this great album. A soulful jam session, Cudi delivers the perfect message about living life and doing what you want to do. “They gone judge me anyway…so whatever.”

Kid Cudi is a unique presence in hip-hop and he has a bright future ahead of him. He is probably one of the most interesting characters to emerge from hip-hop this year.

The Ludacris Foundation Helps A Flooded Atlanta

The Ludacris Foundation (founded by rapper Ludacris) is partnering with the Home Depot and Sam’s Club to help victims of the Atlanta flood. So far the flood has caused $61 million in damages and destroyed about 500 homes.

Common held the second annual “Common & Friends” concert at the Hollywood Palladium on September 26th. The show benefits The Common Ground Foundation which is dedicated to empowering and developing America’s urban youth by providing support and education.

Guest performers included Nas, Ludacris, De La Soul, The Roots, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, but the biggest surprise was a performance by Kanye West.

Fans screamed in excitement as Kanye performed “Good Life”, “Flashing Lights”, “Get Em High” (with Common, Mos Def and Talib Kweli) and “Run This Town”.

VH1 will air the 2009 Hip Hop Honors on Tuesday, October 13th. The sixth annual honors show will have range of stars paying respect to Def Jam Records, as they celebrate 25 years as the premier label for hip hop. Tracy Morgan will host the show, with appearances and performances by Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Chris Rock, The Roots, Public Enemy and Kid Rock, just to name a few.

Def Jam was founded by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin in 1984 in New York. The label made hip hop a worldwide phenomenon by introducing groundbreaking artists like RUN-DMC, The Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Kanye West. Def Jam has expanded into all aspects of our culture by branching into fashion, TV, film and videogames.

Eminem Vs. Apple Inc.

A federal trial is about to begin in Detroit, MI in the case of Eight Mile Style LLC (Eminem's music publisher) and Martin Affiliated LLC (which has a portion of Eight Mile Style LLC) vs. Apple Inc. Eight Mile Style and Martin and Apple failed to settle a lawsuit over whether the rapper’s songs can be downloaded from iTunes.

In the lawsuit, Eight Mile Style and Martin said that Apple used 93 songs in a downloadable format on iTunes without permission. Aftermath Records was also sued saying the company had no right to approve digital downloads, even though the company has control of Eminem’s recordings. Eight Mile Style and Martin said that “Apple has provided and continues to provide digital downloading of recordings of compositions which Eight Mile and Martin are owners of, or have copyright ownership interest in, without obtaining permission or providing compensation.”

It is not known how much, Eight Mile Style and Martin are suing for, but the plaintiff’s say Apple earned $2.58 million from iTunes downloads, including $466,916 from "Lose Yourself," a hit from Eminem's 2002 film "8 Mile." Eight Mile Style and Martin also want a part of the $16 million that Apple earned from iPod sales that could be attributed to the 93 songs as well as $4.03 million from Aftermath.

Susan Lundgren, an Apple spokeswoman, said that “the company does not discuss pending litigation”. No comment has been released by Aftermath Records.

The non-jury trial is expected to last five to seven days. Eminem is not scheduled to testify.

In its second week, Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint 3” is still number one on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums list. Jay sold 476,000 in the first week and another 298,000 in its second. Jay has been touring and appearing on various TV shows to promote the album.

In other rap album news, Kid Cudi’s debut “Man On The Moon: The End Of Day” is at number four with 104,000 albums sold. The album already has two top 50 hits (“Day ‘N’ Night” and “Make Her Say”.) and Drake’s EP “So Far Gone” is at number six with 73,000 albums sold.

What can be said that hasn't already been said about the talent, swagger and ultimately the success of Brooklyn born rapper, Jay-Z? He's a man of integrity and perseverance, and that's a combination not only destined for success, but also for the makings of a legend. The iconic Jay-Z, has out done himself yet again in his most recent album "Blueprint III," a disc that not only celebrates true Hip Hop and showcases the talents of rising lyricists Kid Cudi, and J. Cole, but also gives insight to Jay’s personal view of himself as a artist and as an individual.

"Blueprint III," shows a hint of emotion, as Jay begins to bask in his success, gloating in his glory, for he has proven the force and impact of Hip Hop, as even President Obama has “brushed his shoulders off” during a televised speech.

Although, his first single, “Run This Town,” is a collaboration of nothing less than extraordinary talent with the voice of Rihanna and the wits of Kayne, Jay’s most incredible and rousing song, hands down, is “Empire State of Mind” featuring the ever-so talented Alicia Keys. He rhymes: “I’m the new Sinatra, And since I made it here, I can make it anywhere, Yeah they love me everywhere”

His bars reflect his understanding of himself as a symbol of Hip Hop, and as an ever-lasting voice of its truth. Always proud of his home, Brooklyn, New York, Jay never ceases a moment to remind us of where he came from and of how hard he worked to be the Jay-Z we know and admire, as he rhymes: “I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.”

Blueprint III, is the official album of Jay’s success. It showcases his advancements as a lyricist and a humble mogul. If Reasonable Doubt, is Jay’s mark on building the foundation for success in Hip Hop, than Blueprint III, are the columns in which hold his empire high above the rest.

Drake - So Far Gone EP

Drake is one of hip-hop’s newest rising stars…he has toured with Lil Wayne, released three mixtapes and appeared on several hot singles with Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kanye West and Jamie Foxx.

"So Far Gone" is Drake’s first EP. Originally released as a mixtape earlier this year, its two singles “Best I Ever Had” and “Successful” became big hits, and the decision was made to release an album. Only 5 of the 18 songs from the mixtape appear on the EP, with “Fear” and “I’m Goin’ In” being new. The EP boasts guest appearances from Trey Songz, Lil Wayne and Bun B. I particularly like the track “Fear,” as it speaks to facing an uncertain future and finding your place.

The EP’s strongest track, “Best I Ever Had”, Drake is not afraid to boast that “when my album drops/bitches will buy it for the picture/and n****s will buy it too/and claim they got it for they sister.” I love Drake’s confidence and swagger because if you are going to deliver a line like this, you better have something to back it up- which he does have.

On “Successful” (featuring Trey Songz and Lil Wayne), Drake raps about success- “the money, the cars and the clothes”, but getting through the shit life can bring is real success. I find it refreshing that Drake realizes that as much as “the money, the cars and the clothes” are nice- it’s not a true picture of success, you also need to be successful in all the aspects of life (family, home, relationships).

Drake has a wise beyond his years feel, which I enjoy. I could tell that Drake is not content with simple, but is striving for something more. "So Far Gone" is a good introduction to Drake and what we can expect from him when he releases his full length album in 2010.

Drake Signs With Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown Records

Lil Jon will release “Crunk Rock” on November 24th.

Guest stars include 3Oh!3, Elephant Man, Pastor Troy, Ying Yang Twinz, Pitbull and Florida punk rock group Whole Wheat Bread, R. Kelly, Akon, Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, The Game and Ice Cube.

The Game and Ice Cube will appear on “Killas” (a rewrite of Eazy E’s “2 Hard Mutha’s”), but the album version will differ from the leaked version. Lil Jon said “the mix is incredible, I think Dr. Dre would be proud of me when he listens to it, because it’s just another level.”

The first single will be “Give It All U Got”, but Lil Jon plans to release other songs simultaneously to reach pop, hip-hop and rock listeners.

Lil Jon said “Crunk Rock” is “not just dealing with crunk music and rock — it’s basically a lifestyle. Kanye West Very Sorry For VMA Incident

Kanye West appeared on Jay Leno’s prime-time debut Monday to perform “Run This Town” with Jay-Z & Rihanna, but to also to offer another apology for ruining Taylor Swift’s night at the MTV VMA’s.

Kanye said he knew he was wrong the moment he handed the microphone back to Swift and was booed by the audience. “It was rude, period.” Kanye said. Kanye posted a second apology to Swift on his blog on Monday, and told Leno he wanted to apologize to the country music star in person.

Leno asked Kanye what his mother would say about the incident. Kanye said that his mother (Donda, who passed in 2007 after surgery compilations) would have given him a lecture.

There was a lot to talk about after watching the MTV VMA's on Sunday...like what was Kanye thinking when he jumped on stage and dissed Taylor Swift and who was on stage when Jay-Z & Alicia Keys were performing "Empire State Of Mind" on the MTV VMA's? Well, mystery solved...it's rapper Lil Mama.

In a moment of excitement, Lil Mama jumped on stage and started to act like she was part of the performance. For the record, Lil Mama was not scheduled or asked to perform with Jay & Alicia and she is not on any tracks by Jay or Alicia.

Lil Mama said she "did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys. I admire them and look up to them as role models. 'Empire State of Mind' had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up onstage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY."

All this stage jumping, maybe MTV should think about better security...

Kanye has never been shy in voicing his opinion or throwing a tantum when he does not win, but in a move that shocked everyone, Kanye took the stage at the MTV VMA's to express his anger that Beyonce did not win "Female Video Of The Year"- the problem...Kanye expressed his anger right in the middle of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech.

Taylor said in her speech that she was surprised by the win, especially since she is a Country artist and that is when Kanye took the microphone from Taylor and said "Beyonce had one of the best videos of all-time." Taylor was in shock and left the stage, while Beyonce was completely embarrassed. Later in the show, Beyonce took the stage and she bought Taylor back up so she could give her acceptance speech again.

Several reports said that Kanye was drunk when he arrived on the red carpet. After the incident, MTV asked Kanye to leave.

Kanye did issue an apology to Taylor on his blog, but as of this morning, the apology is gone.

“Shining Down” is the first single off Lupe’s upcoming album Lasers ("Love Always Shines Everytime Remember 2 Smile"). The album is scheduled to be released December 2009.

Pairing with frequent collaborator, Matthew Santos, "Shining Down" is a blend of auto-tune, synth, rock and rap- sounding faintly like Lil Wayne's "Lollipop". Now, don't think because I say that "Shining Down" sounds faintly like "Lollipop", that this track is some auto-tune club banger- "Shining Down" is a gritty look at society.

Lupe delivers a sting to America ("I don’t idolize America/I’m dancing with the stars") and continues to voice the concern he has for his community.

No, I ain’t the n—a tryna get a liquor line
When I be scrippin’ lines, want this petition signed
It says I’m sick of dyin’, sick of this prison time
I really love my people, I’m sick of pimpin’ mine

Lupe also pays respects to his father who passed, with the line "Rap name Lupe but my daddy named me warrior/This is his memorial." I believe that Lupe's career as a whole is a moving memorial to his father, as Lupe raps with intelligence and a worldliness you don't always see in rap or music as a whole.

Matthew Santos sings the chorus with passion and brings a great balance to Lupe's rhymes. I would love to hear a full album with both Lupe and Matthew as they are a great team.

It would not be fair to judge an album based on one song, but based on what Lupe has done and this single, I believe that Lasers is going to be an excellent album.

Snoop Dogg has been named the Creative Chairman of EMI's Priority Records. Ted Chung, Snoop’s Creative Associate and Manager at Stampede Management will become the Brand Strategist for Priority, helping execute Snoop’s business vision for the label.

Snoop said, “It’s a new partnership, a new Priority Records, and a new Snoop Dogg: the Creative Chairman...the Boss Dogg...the Dogg Father. The business model we’ve developed will bring the musical heritage of groups like N.W.A. to the forefront."

Some of the projects Snoop has lined up is a new studio album, "Malice N Wonderland", which should be out in December. Lil Wayne's I Am Music Tour (Dec. 14, 2008-Jan. 28, 2009) had guest artists Keyshia Cole, T-Pain, Gym Class Heroes and Keri Hilson. Wayne's America's Most Wanted Music Festival (July 27-September 6, 2009) had Young Jeezy, Drake (who only appeared at three shows due to an injury), Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, Jeremih and Pleasure P.

Album Review: Audible Mainframe- Transients

Transients is the third album from Audible Mainframe, a six piece hip-hop band from LA.

“When people listen to this album I want them to feel like the future just punched them in the face.” said MC Expo (lead member of Audible Mainframe). “We wanted to make the type of hip-hop record that made us fall in love with hip-hop in the first place: big beats, excellent musicianship, and next level throwback lyricism."

I was not familiar with Audible Mainframe, so when I heard this album I really impressed by the musicianship and the lyrics from this band. I realized in listening to the album, that there are not a lot of hip-hop bands- The Roots come to mind, but I would be hard pressed to think of another band out there. I think that Audible Mainframe stands out because they are more than just hip-hop; they are rap, soul and rock. The lyrics are intelligent and thoughtful.

The opening track, “Money and Flash” took me in immediately. A homage to hip-hop heroes like Tupac and Biggie, the track pays respect to the genre and the people who have paved the way.

I loved "Don't Be A Sheep (On Friday Night) because MC Expo delivers a great message about being an individual.

For being a six piece band, I felt that I could hear each members journey in the lyrics and how flawless the sound is.

The energy of this album is intense and I am interested to see what the band is like live. I don't know if this album will break Audible Mainframe from the underground scene to the mainstream, but I think that this is a band that you should seek out.

Amaru Entertainment Scores Major Victory

LOS ANGELES, CA – Lawyers for Amaru Entertainment scored a major victory against Morgan Creek Productions in the Superior Court for the State ofCalifornia on Tuesday, September 1, when Judge Richard E. Rico ruled in their favor and upheld Amaru Entertainment’s cross-complaint for tortious intentional interference. A trial date has now been set for Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

Skip Miller of Miller Barondess, LLP in Los Angeles, attorney for Amaru Entertainment, said “We are pleased with the court’s ruling yesterday morning. It supports our claim that Morgan Creek tortiously interfered with the making of the Tupac Shakur movie. I look forward to trying this case and have the jury decide the matter. Morgan Creek has a history of bullying people into giving them rights they did not acquire. This time, they picked on the wrong people.”

The litigation started when Morgan Creek filed suit against Amaru Entertainment in February this year, alleging that the company had “backed out of negotiations” and was currently “refusing to honor and perform a contract of a production for a film based on the life of Tupac Shakur.” In actuality, there was never any agreement as key deal terms had never been agreed upon between the parties. This was a scheme by Morgan Creek to bully Amaru Entertainment into doing a movie with them and interfere with Amaru Entertainment's negotiations for the film with other studios.

In the ruling yesterday, the court held that Amaru adequately stated a claim against Morgan Creek for interference by making "intentional misrepresentations of fact to third-party studios claiming to own the film rights and threatening them to back off on further negotiations with Amaru Entertainment."

50 Cent Postpones 40 Day Event

50 Cent had to postpone his 40 Day event that was supposed to occur on Sunday, August 30th in Queens, NY as he was not able to obtain a permit from the city for the picnic.

50 Cent met with NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg to discuss the event and it had his support, but the main reason why the event could not go forth was that there was a fear that too many people would show up and safety would be compromised.

50 said “They (the Mayor’s office and city officals) told me not to promote the event, and then it got national coverage (the Post ran an article promoting the event before negotiations were completed). Then the fear factor comes in, can you control 100,000 people being in your neighborhood? Cause you might not be sure of a turnout at an actual venue, but in the neighborhood, everyone is gonna show up.”

50 questioned why the Post would report on the event before negotiations were completed by saying “Why are they reporting about an event that hasn't taken place yet? Did no one get killed that day? Did no accidents happen that day? Why are they so interested? Because they know they can sell newspapers that way.”

50 said he is disappointed as he wanted to give his community something special. The Mayor’s office and city officials said that they will continue to work with 50 to ensure the event is successful and safe.

Chris Brown- Still Sorry For His Actions

Chris Brown’s Larry King Live interview hasn’t even aired yet, but Chris is taking heat for the comment he made that he does not remember what happened the night he attacked Rihanna. Many people were angry at this comment and felt that Chris was not truly sorry for the attack. Chris released the following statement to show the public that he is sorry and that he has and will continue to take full responsibility for his actions.

"There have been reports on the Internet that I didn't remember what happened that night with Rihanna. I want to try and set things straight.

That 30 seconds of the interview they used of me was taken from a one hour interview during which that same question was asked something like 4 or 5 times -- and when you look at the entire interview you will see it is not representative of what I said.

The first four times – or how ever many times it was - I gave the same answer -- which was that I didn't think it was appropriate for me to talk about what happened that night. I said it was not right for me and it really wasn't fair to Rihanna. The fifth time – or whatever it was – I just misspoke. I was asked, "Do you remember doing it?" and I said, "No."Of course I remember what happened. Several times during the interview, my mother said that I came to her right afterwards and told her everything. But it was and still is a blur. And yes, I still can't believe it happened because it is not me or who I am or is what happened like anything I have ever done before.

As I have said several times previously, I am ashamed of and sorry for what happened that night and I wish I could relive that moment and change things, but I can't. I take full responsibility for my actions. What I have to do now is to prove to the world that this was an isolated incident and that is not who I am and I intend to do so by my behavior now and in the future."

Chris is now in Virginia to start his sentence of 6 months hard labor and his 52-week long domestic violence course.

Memphis Bleek To Release A New Album

Rapper, Memphis Bleek is slated to release his fifth album, “The Process E2” on November 24th. The album will be executive produced by Memphis’ mentor Jay-Z. Rick Ross, Pharrell, Just Blaze and No I.D. are producing some of the tracks and Jay-Z will make a guest appearance in addition to being executive producer.

Memphis Bleek was one of the first artists signed to Roc-A-Fella records and was featured on the following Jay-Z albums, “Reasonable Doubt”, “In My Lifetime Vol. 1", “Hard Knock Life” and “The Dynasty: Roc La Familia”.

The album will be released on Mass Appeal Entertainment and Memphis’ own Get Low Records. Memphis said of the album, “”The Process' has been exactly that -- a process. Taking what I've learned from a teacher and creating my own school, it's time for me to handle my own business as a man and Mass Appeal supports the vision. I'm excited to take the next steps in my career independently."

Chris Brown Still Loves Rihanna

Chris Brown will give his first television interview since his arrest for assaulting Rihanna back in February.

In an interview that will air on Wednesday, September 2nd, Chris talked with CNN’s Larry King saying that he has no memory of beating Rihanna and that he still loves her.

When asked about the details of the attack listed in the police report, Chris said that "I'm in shock because first of all, that's not who I am as a person and that's not who I pride myself on being, so when I look at the police reports or I hear about the police reports, I don't know what to think…I just don't know what to think. It's just like, wow."

Chris’ mother Joyce Hawkins and his attorney, Mark Geragos also participates in the interview. Joyce said that “He came and he actually spoke to me about what happened, and I was totally shocked, I know that Chris has never, ever been a violent person, ever."

Chris said that "I made a mistake, and I -- and it was just something I have to live up and own.”

Chris was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community labor and there is a protective order in place which says Chris must stay at least 100 yards away from Rihanna (10 yards if at a career-related event).

There were rumors that Omarion was dropped from the label, but in an official statement, Omarion said that "I have a lot of respect and admiration for the genius of Lil Wayne and the entire Young Money family. I asked to be released from the label to pursue other opportunities that were recently presented to me. Because of our relationship, Lil Wayne had no issue with us ending our business relationship and released me from the label. Lil Wayne and I have nothing but love for each other, there is no beef. I also wanted to make it clear that my company nor did I, leak the song, 'I Get It In,' and I want to dispel any rumors that have surfaced. I appreciate my relationship with Young Money/Cash Money and look forward to doing business in the future. There will be a major announcement regarding my career and my new album, Ollusion, coming next week."

Although Slaughterhouse grinds and strives on the roots of Hip Hop, they have the greatest sense of humor I’ve seen in a Hip Hop group. Joe’s ability to not take himself too serious is an ultimate plus to the group, as their audience can definitely credit them for character and personality. The skit, “In the Mind of Madness,” gives a playful look into the ever over-working mind of Joe Budden; needless to say that it’s hilarious!

Slaughterhouse will never stand in the category of “mainstream” and that is something I truly appreciate. Finally, an album for real Hip Hop heads!

Chris Brown Sentenced

Chris Brown has been placed on felony probation for 5 years in connection with his guilty plea to felony assault for beating Rihanna back in February. Chris was sentenced to community labor, which he will perform in Virginia (his home state).

The judge issued a protective order against Chris which says he can not harass, assault, threaten or molest Rihanna at anytime.

Per the terms of probation, Chris must obey the following rules and orders:

• Keep in touch with the Probation Department and report to court every 3 months during probation
• Subject to search and seizure 24/7 until probation is over
• Can not own any dangerous weapon- including guns or knives
• Provide DNA samples as requested by authorities

Chris will have to complete a 52 week long domestic violence program sponsored by the Commonwealth Catholic Charities. He also has to pay $2,500 in restitution, another $2,500 in probation expenses, $30 criminal conviction fee and $400 for the domestic violence fund.

Jay-Z & Beyonce's Bodyguard Attacks Photographers

Croatian police will not press charges against Jay-Z and Beyonce’s bodyguard after investigating a report filed by photographers.

The bodyguard was trying to shield the couple (who were vacationing in Dubrovnik, Croatia) from the photographers, but the photographers said that bodyguard got physical with them. Footage of the altercation shows the bodyguard (named only as Julius) wrestling with the photographers outside a restaurant, while Jay-Z can be heard saying "let's go, let's go, don't worry about it" and "stop, stop, stop".

The footage later shows Jay-Z, Beyonce and others boarding a boat. The photographers threw an object at the bodyguard and the bodyguard threw the object into the sea.

The photographers claimed that the bodyguard made threats, physically attacked them and damaged their equipment.

Lil Wayne’s Tour Buses Attacked

After Lil Wayne’s show in Arizona last week, two of his tour buses were attacked at an apartment complex in suburban Phoenix.

Witnesses reported seeing four buses stop at the apartment complex and several women getting on and off the buses.

It is not fully known what exactly happened, but somehow the situation turned violet with people throwing rocks and bottles. There were reports of shots fired, but police do not know who fired it.

Police did break up the situation, but a 15 year old boy filed a police report claiming one of Wayne’s bodyguards bruised his ribs.

The police interviewed Wayne at his hotel after the incident, but Wayne said that his bus and another bus left the scene as soon as the attack occurred.

"It's official, I'm a Cash Money Millionaire” Bow Wow told his fans via Twitter.

The rapper had parted with Columbia Records earlier this year and had said that he was deciding between signing with T.I.’s Grand Hustle (through Atlantic Records) or So So Def when Jermaine Dupri signed a new deal.

Cash Money Millionaire co-CEO Birdman gave Bow Wow a third option. Bow said that "we had two sit-downs, upon the first sit-down, I called Birdman and told him what I wanted to do. So it was a no-brainer. He was like, 'Bow, you always been family. Next to Wayne, I look at you like my son. If you not with JD, you with us.' From there, it was a done deal. So I wanna thank [him], Slim and Wayne." Bow Wow also added that, "with me coming to Cash Money, I bring something to the table that hasn't been there in their history. I bring the whole Hollywood side, from that perspective."

Bow Wow will release the Greenlight mixtape, a single in November and a new album probably by the end of the year.

A new Chris Brown song called “Changed Man” was leaked online last week and now people are wondering if the song will be the first single off Chris’ upcoming album “Graffiti”. Chris' reps say that the track is not the first single off "Graffiti", but in reality an old song Chris recorded a while back.

Chris sings, "I'm a changed man, because you mean that much to me/And I don't want to be done/I'm doing all that I can, and everybody hates Chris/They can never understand."

Many believe that the song is an apology to Rihanna for assaulting her last February, but Chris’ reps would not comment on that.

On Thursday, America's Most Wanted (Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, Young Jeezy, and the true highlight and headliner, Lil' Wayne) rolled into the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles to perform to a sold out crowd.

Soulja Boy started off the night and performed his hits, "Crank That" and "Ya, Trick Ya!" Soulja's performance was hyper and energetic as he moved, jumped and danced all over the stage.

Young Jeezy definitely put on for the city (no pun intended), performing "Put On," "Love In This Club" and other hits off "Thug Motavation." Jeezy also promoted his up-coming album "TP103" - coming out soon.

Around 10:20 PM, the lights went down. You could feel the surge of energy exploding as the crowd anticipated Lil Wayne's entrance. The shouts of "Wayne, Wayne" made it feel like the crowd was welcoming a king, Hip-Hop royalty if you will.

With a flash of light and fire, Lil Wayne rushed the stage, opening with "Carter III" anthem, "A Milli." When Wayne said he's "I'm sick, I'm ill", there was no one who disagreed.

"I believe in three things..." Wayne told the crowd just after he performed "A Milli." "One," he said, "I believe in God. Two. I'm shit without you, my fans, and three. I'm shit without you!" The crowd roared in approval. Wayne also took time to show respect to the great rappers who came before him...he asked the crowd to put one finger in the air for Biggie...two fingers for Pac...three fingers for Jay-Z and four for himself.

Lil Wayne was on point the whole set; performing "Prom Queen" on guitar, "Lollipop," his verse of "Swagga Like Us," "Shoot Me Down," "Mrs. Officer," "Kush" and "Tie Me Down," just to name a few. Wayne also shared the stage with Birdman and gave the spotlight to the up-and-coming artists on his Young Money label.

Lil Wayne is a rock star...and this show was probably the one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.

Constantly reminding his audience where he’s from, it is no wonder why Ortiz is the most critically acclaimed independent rapper of his time. Standing on a mass of hardship, struggle and intelligence, Ortiz truly defines the original meaning of a Hip Hop Rapper. His style, flow, consistency and even his choice of words seem to be carefully depicted through the thoughts of a great visionary.

Above it all, Ortiz understands the concept of story-telling. His words, choice of movement and dramatic pauses cause for a potent story and in the end, causes his audience to fall in love with Hip Hop yet again, as he reignites that lustful spark that once burned effortlessly.

C-Murder Convicted

Rapper Corey "C-Murder" Miller was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder in connection with the 2002 shooting of 16 year-old Steve Thomas at a New Orleans nightclub. Miller was originally found guilty of this crime in 2003.

The jury reached the 10-2 verdict on the second day of deliberations. The jury deliberation did have some complications as at least three jurors had a hard time coming to a decision and one juror had changed their vote just to end the deliberation, which makes the verdict invaild. District Judge Hans Liljeberg ordered the jurors back to the jury room for more deliberation because of a questionable vote. Miller's attorney, Ron Rakosky asked for a mistrial saying the judge pressured the jury to reach a verdict. The judge denied the motion saying "I told them if they could not reach a verdict to let me know."

Miller declined to comment on the verdict, but his family accused the prosecutors of corruption and said that "this verdict is wrong and we will not let this rest". Prosecutor David Wolff said "the verdict would stand up on appeal. The judge ran a very clean trial. Deliberating on a homicide case is difficult."

Steve Thomas' family was in tears after the verdict was read. Steve's father, George Thomas said "I'm not rejoicing. I feel bad for (Miller's) family. But at least they can see him. What have we got but a gravesite and a photograph."

Attorneys for both sides return Friday morning to court where a date will be set for the sentencing hearing.

Kristinia may only be 19 years old, but she has done a lot in her career so far. Born into the 1980's R & B group DeBarge (her father is James DeBarge), Kristinia got her start singing at age 3 and went into the recording studio at age 12with her father. At age 13, Kristinia was on the talent show American Juniors, making it to the semi-final round. At age 14, Kristinia met and started working with producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and by the age of 19, released her debut, Exposed.

The first single off the album is Goodbye, which samples the 1969 Steam song Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. The song is featured in Nivea's new skin care commercials. The song lets girls know that they are special, beautiful and that they do not have to settle for anyone who does not treat them with respect.

Exposed has a great team of pop producers and writers; in addition to Babyface, Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic frontman), The Jam and The Pentagon contribute catchy pop songs and R & B ballads. Kristinia also co-writes two songs on the album called Cried Me A River and It's Gotta Be Love.

I like how Kristinia sings about subjects that other young adults can relate to; she is not trying to sound older than she is and her songs are relatable. Kristinia's voice is energetic and a talent that will only expand. Exposed is a great debut for the newest pop princess.

When I heard that Fabolous released an album called Loso's Way, I could not help to think the title sounded like Carlito's Way- even the fonts for Carlito's Way and Loso's Way look the same. So I was surprised to learn that this is no accident, but rap has always looked to Al Pacino and his films for inspiration.

Loso's Way is a concept album which ties into Fabolous' movie about him leaving a restaurant when he is shot. His three friends quickly rush Fabolous to the hospital, but are stopped by the police after running a red light. The movie which is included on the deluxe version of the CD, also features Styles P, DJ Clue, DJ Khaled, Jadakiss, Swizz Beatz, DJ Envy and Ryan Leslie.

Loso's Way is not shy when it comes to the number of producers which include DJ Clue, Ryan Leslie, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. StreetRunner, The Runners, DJ Khalil, Miguel Jiminez, The Alchemist, Syience, Jermaine Dupri, Sami Wilf, LRoc, No I.D., Sid V, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Sean C. & L.V., Blackout Movement and L Pro.

Guests on the album include, Keri Hilson, Lil' Wayne, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz and Jay-Z on the track Money Goes, Honey Stay.

Money Goes, Honey Stay is one of the best tracks on the CD, with Jay-Z taking the lead.

Stay with Marsha Ambrosius is a moving track about fatherhood and the moments between a parent and child. You can feel Fabolous' pain when he says "my daddy left me and he ain't even die/So when he had to go, I ain't even cry". I was touched when he questions the kind of father he is when he had to miss important moments in his child's life so he can earn a living, but realizes that there are more important things than rap or music.

Everything, Everywhere, Everyday with Keri Hilson is infectious and a fun single and I can see this being played at block party on a hot summer day.

I think Loso's Way is in an interesting concept and Fabolous growth as a rapper does show on the tracks.

C-Murder Trial Starting

Opening statements are set to start in the murder trial of rapper C-Murder (also known as Corey Miller).

Corey is charged with second degree murder in the 2002 shooting death of 16 year old fan Steve Thomas during a fight in a New Orleans club. Jury selection is now complete and the case is expected to start today.

If Corey is found guilty, he faces a mandatory life sentence. Corey was originally convicted in 2003, but a judge granted a new trial after the prosecutors denied the defense from seeing the criminal background information for three witnesses.

The reports that Kanye West is set to take over Michael Jackson's self-imposed title "The King Of Pop" are false.

Michael's fans were upset to hear that Kanye feels that he is the new "King Of Pop" after he said in an interview "You know everyone loves and respects Michael but times change - it's so sad to see Michael gone but it makes a path for a new King of Pop and I'm willing to take that on. First there was Elvis, then there was Michael, now in the 21st century it is Kanye's time to rule. I have nothing but respect for Michael but someone needs to pick up where he left off and there's nobody better than me to do that. I am the new King of Pop."

Kanye's reps said that the rapper never made these comments and that is it internet hoax. West blogged that this rumor upsets him as he would not make such a statement following Michael's death.

I am going to review book/album, but the twist is that the album is not available in stores due to a dispute with EMI. EMI will not go into the specifics as to why the album will not be released, but they said that "Danger Mouse is a brilliant, talented artist for whom we have enormous respect. We continue to make every effort to resolve this situation and we are talking to Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) directly. Meanwhile, we need to reserve our rights."

The book accompanying the album is available for sell and will contain a blank recordable CD-R. All CD's will contain the message, "for legal reasons the enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will."

Both parties have remained silent about the details, but it is believed that the problems with distribution center around a record deal that Danger Mouse signed with Lex Records.

Dark Night Of The Soul is an album written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous). The album features James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of The Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch and Scott Spillane Of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils. The singers also help composing and producing the album.

Now you might wonder why David Lynch is on the album since he is the creator of Twin Peaks and the director of Blue Velvet, but Danger Mouse wanted stark and powerful images to go with the music and he felt that David would be able to accomplish the tasks. While David also appears on the tracks, his voice is not a singers voice, but he does well enough.

The artists on the album come from the worlds of pop, rock and alternative and through the excellent production of Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, the voices and songs fit very well and do not seem disjointed. The production and the lyrics are dark and seem like you are listening to the soundtrack of Twin Peaks.

Some of the stand out tracks include, "The Man Who Played God" sung by Suzanne Vega about making your craziness work for you and "Daddy's Gone" on which Mark Linkous and Nina Persson talk about the freedom that comes with being abandoned. “Insane Lullaby” which features James Mercer contains some very haunting lyrics like "Dreams float up from fishes in the flood; at a new dimension; leaving only parts to play; needs are forming again; a good life would just never be enough."

Unless the dispute between Danger Mouse and EMI is resolved, this will become another "lost album" like The Grey Album (Jay-Z's Black Album, remixed with The Beatles' White Album), which would be a shame as the Dark Night Of The Soul is just brilliant concept from start to finish.

The Diesel:U:Music event was held at Webster Hall in New York last week and featured The Roots, Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, Heartsrevolution, The Noisettes, Passion Pit, Lykke Li, Theophilus London (with The Very Best's Esau Mwamwaya), Cobra Starship and The Clipse, featuring Kanye West.

The Game Sued

Robert Kirkwood filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming his cousin Jayceon Terrell Taylor (otherwise known as The Game) and four others assaulted him at his sister’s funeral back in July 2008.

The suit says that assault occurred when Robert confronted The Game because he would not pay for a part of the funeral costs. Allegedly, the rapper and four others attacked Robert.

Robert said that he suffered severe and permanent injuries and is asking for the rapper and the others to pay his medical bills, loss of wages and for the pain and suffering he has endured.

Slim Da Mobster- Dr. Dre, Eminem & 50 Cent’s New Protégé

Dr. Dre has added up and coming South Central rapper Slim Da Mobster to the list of contributors for the Detox album.

Slim Da Mobster is new to the rap scene, but his flow and rhymes impressed 50 Cent, Eminem and Dr. Dre so much all three signed Slim Da Mobster to their respected labels (G-Unit, Shady and Aftermath). Slim is also managed by John Monopoly, who helped guide Kanye West’s transition from a producer to an artist.

Slim said "I'm not even focused on my album right now. I'm all about his (Dr. Dre) album, cause the better I do on that, the better it is for the situation with my album."

Mos Def is a rapper who’s name lives up to his skill. As a rapper, he is socially aware about the world and politics. Mos uses hip-hop as a forum to discuss what is going on and what we are not even aware is going on. Mos has come a long way in his 10 year plus career- starting Black Star with Talib Kweli (another rapper worth checking out), going solo and acting.

Mos’ forth album, The Ecstatic is a well produced hip-hop album. Madlib, Oh No (Madlib's brother), Chad Hugo (of The Neptunes), Mr. Flash and the late J Dilla all contribute to the album.

The track History is almost like history as Talib Kweli and the late producer J Dilla are all on it. Mos and Talib trade verses against a smooth jazz beat. As a personal side note, I would like Black Star to do another album, but for those who are not familiar with the group, listen to their track Definition- it’s a classic.

Roses features the voice of Georgia Anne Muldrow. Her tender voice is so sweet to listen to. Her father is the late jazz guitarist Ronald Muldrow and her mother is Rickie Byars-Beckwith.

Workers Comp talks about overcoming tough times, which many people can relate to now of days.

Mos quotes the classic Rappers Delight on the track Quiet Dog, which is pretty cool to hear a bridge between the old and the new school.

The album is poetic and is one of his best works since Black On Both Sides, which is another great album to check out. Even though their are several producers on the album, the tracks flow together very well and create an ecstatic (no pun intended) sound.

A fun fact, the album cover taken from Charles Burnett's 1977 film, Killer Of Sheep.

Jay-Z To Play All Points West Music & Arts Festival

Jay-Z will be making his US festival debut at this years All Points West Music & Arts Festival, which will be held from 7/31-8/2 at Liberty State Park, NJ.

Jay-Z will be replacing The Beastie Boys as they have canceled their appearance due to Adam “MCA’ Yauch’s cancer diagnosis. Because of the cancelation, All Points West organizers will give point of purchase refunds for 7/31 single-day tickets.

Other artists playing at the event are Coldplay, Tool, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, My Bloody Valentine, Gogol Bordello, Echo & The Bunnymen, MGMT, MSTRKRFT, the Black Keys, Fleet Foxes, Neko Case, the Ting Tings, the National, Silversun Pickups and Arctic Monkeys, among others.

Nas Is A Father

The rapper Nas is a father to a boy named Knight Jones. The mother is Nas’ estranged wife Kelis. Both mother and son are doing fine.

Kelis filed for divorce earlier this year. The pair were married in 2005. Kelis is asking for child support, spousal support and joint custody of their son. So far, the court has grant Kelis $55,000 a month in spousal and child support, plus $35,000 in attorney fees. Nas has a 15 year old daughter from a previous relationship.

Chris Brown Apologies For Rihanna Beating

Chris Brown has issued a public apology video to Rihanna and the public for the February beating. In the video Chris said that, “I have told Rihanna countless times and I am telling you today that I am truly, truly sorry and that wasn’t I able to handle the situation both differently and better.” and that “What I did was unacceptable, 100 percent. I can only ask and pray that you forgive me, please. I hope that others learn from my mistake.”

Chris said that he has spoken with his mother and minister to further understand why the February incident happened. Chris said in the past that he witnessed his mother getting beaten by his dad.

Chris did release a statement after the February beating saying he was “sorry and saddened about what transpired that night”, but he never mentioned Rihanna or the details of that night. Chris said that he was advised by his attorney not to speak publicly about the incident.

Chris was charged with two felonies and was facing jail time, but he reached a plea deal with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office and was sentenced on June 22nd to 180 days of community labor and ordered to enroll in a domestic violence counseling program.

Beastie Boys’ MCA Announces Cancer Diagnosis

Adam “MCA” Yauch announced that he has a cancerous tumor in his left salivary gland and will undergo surgery in the coming weeks. The tumor is localized and is treatable. Adam’s vocal chords should not be affected and he is expected to make a full recovery.

The band canceled their summer tour plans and delayed the release of their forthcoming album “Hot Sauce Committee Part 1” in order to give MCA time to recover.

Jay-Z has declared that Auto-Tune is dead.

For those who don't know what Auto-Tune is, it a program that corrects pitch or any other mistakes on a song. It can also be used to change one's voice to sound like a robot or add sound effects. An example of Auto-Tune in action would be Kayne West's 808 & Heartbreaks. It's an album completely done with Auto-Tune.

Funny enough, Kayne who loves Auto-Tune, co-produces this track and other tracks on Jay-Z's upcoming The Blueprint 3. This track and the whole album will not have any Auto-Tune.

Jay-Z was inspired to write the track after he noticed that Auto-Tune was being used everywhere (including fast food commercials). He felt that artists are using the technology as a crutch instead of being innovative and creative.

Jay-Z states that this track is not for the radio or to be a hit, but something real. The track is aggressive and boastful (it's Jay-Z, so he can brag that he is the only rapper to re-write history without a pen). Jay-Z also challenges others making depressive and shit music, by having them pull down their skirt and grow a set.

The Blueprint 3 is slated to drop later this year and even though Jay-Z says that this track ain't for iTunes- download it anyways.
